Hot Attractions

HMS Warrior 1860

- What makes HMS Warrior so special

A new addition to the fleet at the National Museum of the Royal Navy is HMS Warrior 1860, the first iron-hulled, armoured battleship in British history. HMS Warrior 1860, which saw service during the height of the British Empire and industrial and commercial supremacy in the United Kingdom, was the crown jewel of Queen Victoria's navy.

- Travel back in time to the Tour of Britain

Everything on board Warrior has been brought back to life as it appeared in 1863, from the jetty to the engine room. Due to the Tour of Britain, Warrior became available to the general public for the first time. There was a huge party to honour British innovation as they made the switch from wooden to iron ships. Get a map at the door so you can find your way around the new layout.

- Immerse yourself in Victorian ingenuity

You'll be immersed in the epic tale of the event's unfolding right from the moment you embark. The ship's captain's quarters and galley are among the newly interpreted rooms that pay homage to the ship's 156-year-old history. Set dressing so real you can reach out and touch it takes you back to the time when Queen Victoria's favourite ship was unrivalled on the high seas.

- Meet characters from the past

Every new area you enter and artefacts you handle will further transport you to another era. Experience history like never before as you interact with real-life characters like a gunner getting ready for war or a Victorian tourist in awe of the ship's grandeur. Interrogate them, listen to their tales, and discover the secrets of this myth with a steel hull.

As part of the reimagining, their 'Dockyard Alive' crew will bring Victorian-era England to Warrior. Her narrative centres on real-life individuals who were active during the Tour of Britain. Some of the crew members may have never spoken to the kind taxpayers who paid for their ship before, while others may be eager to tell you a tale or offer some insight into their daily routine.

Harbour Tours

In the 860s, King Alfred the Great founded the British Navt at Portsmouth. This broad natural inlet in the coastline is a flooded river valley sheltered by a deep tight entry on two sides of the dockyard, here and at Gosport, making an ideal harbour.

After the Norman Conquest in 1066, Portchester Castle was built on the northern shore to guard against Viking invasions and preserve trade.

By the late 12th century, a small village had arisen on Portsea Island's south-western corner to house labourers and serve troops during the battles with France. In 1194, King Richard I granted Portsmouth a Royal Charter to build a dockyard, and in 1212, King John walled it in.

The 45-minute Harbour Tour includes the Round Tower at the harbour entrance and the Solent forts, which were the centre of a network of defences along the coast during the Napoleonic Wars.

- Planning your Harbour Tour

Please check the Harbour Tours office on the dockyard for the most up-to-date scheduling, as operations are weather dependent and will be scaled back upon reopening to comply with government regulations.

Everyone is welcome to join them on the Harbour Tour, however for the sake of everyone's safety, strollers and baby carriers must be left in the designated buggy parks. Both of these are found in Boathouse 5 and are an integral part of Boathouse 4. Find a team member to ask before joining the line if you need help finding these.

Tickets for the harbour excursions are not sold in advance, but can be obtained on the day of at the Harbour Tours Office on the Dockyard.

Laser Quest Portsmouth

- Enjoy a day at Laser Quest in Portsmouth

Do not overlook Laser Quest Portsmouth at Action Stations for the ultimate adrenaline-fueled shoot out while planning your next laser tag adventure. You can aim at your opponents' teammates and take cover behind walls in this laser tag arena.

- AN INTENSE GAME OF LASER TAG FOR GROUPS

This cooperative experience pits teams against one another in a thrilling setting: a pirate stronghold and a stolen container ship. In each session, individuals who are brave enough to participate will be transported to a desolate pirate base, providing the perfect setting for a thrilling game of laser tag.

- YOUR LASER QUEST GAME EXPLAINED

The sessions last 20 minutes and feature a briefing from a veteran Laser Quest Marshal. They estimate 15 minutes of actual play time, although this could increase or decrease depending on how long it takes everyone to get outfitted.

If you successfully ‘shoot’ another player, you score points and if you are 'shot' by another player, you lose points. You'll be given a Laser Quest Pack and a Gun, both of which feature illuminated targets on the front, back, and shoulders, as well as on the sides and front.

The Gun fires a laser beam in the direction of your target, and getting shot will render your pack useless for up to four seconds.

A game is over when the siren sounds. You may keep track of the score on their plasma score screen, and each player will receive a scorecard with their personal stats.

There is a required 15-minute break between each session to provide players time to recover from the previous game and replenish their fluids. You should take this opportunity to relax with a drink, compare notes on how you did, and plot your next move before returning to this thrilling activity.

The Mary Rose

King Henry VIII watched the drowning of his flagship, the Mary Rose, from nearby Southsea Castle in 1545. The Mary Rose had served in Henry VIII's navy for 34 years. Her bones were discovered in 1982 and are currently on display alongside the thousands of artefacts from the ship and the period that were also found. There is no other vessel like her in the world.

The Mary Rose Museum is like stepping back in time to Tudor times because it has the world's biggest collection of authentic Tudor artefacts. You'll learn about the men's experiences on the ship through displays that are as interactive as they are informative, accompanied by guides who are experts in their fields.

In addition to shedding light on Tudor times, the Mary Rose wreck has contributed to their understanding of other historic shipwrecks around the world.

Many artefacts were unearthed in good condition, but excavation and subsequent exposure to air can pose a threat to their stability, thus it is important to create effective conservation techniques to preserve them.

From their origins and lifestyles to the details of their deaths, everything they know about the crew of the Mary Rose comes from artefacts recovered from the shipwreck.

- Discovery Visits

An HMS Victory, HMS Warrior 1860, Mary Rose, or HMS M33 Discovery Visit is an independent museum tour led by a teacher. They're thrilled to provide you with the option of a Discovery Visit accompanied by a Discovery Challenge pack for students and a teacher trial. This allows you to make the most of your school trip by visiting various places with just one admission fee. Any school trip to the United Kingdom also includes a tour of the galleries at the National Museum of the Royal Navy.

- Discover More

Teachers can schedule a Discovery Visit with a themed Discovery Chest and supporting Discovery Back Pack. Each Discovery Chest includes activities and materials to help students answer museum gallery theme questions. HMS Victory, Warrior 1860, and M33 use Discover More Back Packs for activities. Each pack provides challenges and materials to stimulate observation, discussion, and inspiration for historical inquiry and creative writing. Discover More at the Mary Rose includes an introductory discussion and a look at the reserve collection of artefacts not on display. The museum staff will assist teachers navigate the museum with confidence.

- Discover More Live

Discover More Live is a brand-new option that combines a gallery session conducted by museum professionals with a teacher-led excursion aboard a ship. Your school will be able to interact with costumed interpreters, handle authentic and replica artefacts, and observe conservation in action.
