Burton Shopping Information
Burton Menswear, was founded by Sir Montague Burton---a Lithuanian Jewish immigrant to England---in 1903. When he was just 18 years of age, he took a £100 loan from a relative to open the Cross-Tailoring Company located in Chesterfield. For Burton, good clothes developed a man's self-respect.. This…was his was mantra and motivation. He made it an obligation to provide high quality bespoke suits at an affordable price. Burton’s dedication to making bespoke suits revolutionized the fashion industry; especially with his promise of making and selling bespoke suits worth five guinea, for 55 shillings.
At the dawn of the First World War, Burton seized the opportunity to make a switch from suit production, to the production of army uniforms which clothed about a quarter of the armed forces. Burton’s business experienced tremendous growth in 1929. And by the time he went public, he had an astounding four hundred shops, a handful of factories, and mills as well.
In 1931, Montague Burton was knighted for his efforts in engendering progress in industrial relations and international peace, as well. He was also appointed a Justice of the Peace. He held this a post for several years. Burton’s passion wasn’t just to clothe men of all nations and raise the bar as regards the quality of life for his employees; but he also had a burning desire to work together with those working for the progress of culture and education globally. His fashion brand “The House of Burton” was pivotal to the creation of the United Nations Association.
At the start of the Second World War, The House of Burton switched once again to the production of military uniforms. By the time the World War II was over, Burton began the production of a suit designed for war veterans, known as "The Full Monty".
Unfortunately, Sir Montague Burton passed away in 1952. At the time of his death The House of Burton was arguably the biggest multiple tailor in the world. The House of Burton has the enviable reputation of having suited the 1966 England World Cup winners. By 1967 The House of Burton officially adopted the corporate name, “Arcadia”. The House of Burton also has the reputation of having suited both the England Euro 2000 and the World Cup 2002 squads. However, in 2002, Philip Green took over the Arcadia Group and became the first to do so since Sir Montague Burton.
